CBD and Medication Interaction

CBD and Medication Interaction

CBD and Medication Interaction —

One question that I tend to come across a lot is if CBD interacts with medication. It’s a valid concern, especially in a day an age where it seems like medications are getting prescribed without thought. While I am not a doctor and can’t tell you for certain how it will interact in your body, I can hopefully provide some insight. And if you are still unsure about CBD and medication interaction, you should consult your physician or pharmacist.

One general rule of thumb is to avoid CBD if your medication has a grapefruit warning on the label. Some medications might have this warning because consuming grapefruit can lead to a higher concentration of the medication into the bloodstream. This is due to chemicals in the grapefruit slowing down the metabolization of the medication as they bind to the same receptors. This can cause you to experience more adverse side effects. CBD also binds to these same receptors also slowing down metabolization. So, if you see the grapefruit warning, ask your doctor.

Blood Thinners

Another type of CBD and medication interaction that can be harmful is using it with blood thinners. One blood thinner in particular, Coumadin, should not be taken with CBD. This medication is an anticoagulant that is used to prevent the formation of dangerous blood clots. Blood clots can lead to heart attacks and strokes making it important to take this medication responsibly. Since both the CBD and medication is absorbed through the same receptor, CYP450, the metabolism of the Coumadin will be slowed down. This will not absorb enough of the medication needed.

If CBD is taken with medications that have the same side effects as it, an additive effect can occur. CBD can be used to induce a sedative effect, and if you take a sedative, you can experience increased drowsiness and lethargy. This doesn’t just occur with sedatives; it can be any medication that has similar side effect. As every person is different, and reacts differently, you should in general be careful regarding the additive effect.

Most other medications are generally safe to take with CBD. If there are any interactions, they are minimal to non-existent. You might experience increased side effects when taken with antidepressants, medications that cause drowsiness, macrolide antibiotics, and heart medications. However, increased side effects do not necessarily mean unsafe. Again, it is important to check with your doctor if you have concerns.
